proposal

Tyler had me convinced that we wouldn't be getting engaged until January 2014, maybe December 2013. So when he suggested we should have a date night on a Saturday in the middle of September, I didn't think anything of it. So much that I objected to going to Ventana Grill in Shell Beach, which is where he said we should go. As much as I love Ventana, I wanted to try a cool, new art bar downtown and I was trying to get my way (looking back, I'm glad I didn't!)

The days leading up to our date, Tyler was persistently pestering me about getting engaged in Dec/Jan, so much that I told him I was tired of talking about it. I said, "Just do what you got to do to feel comfortable. I don't want to talk about it anymore!"

We were getting ready to leave his house for dinner on Saturday when he "realized" he wanted to bring a jacket (clue #1). I said, "Really? You need a jacket from the car to the restaurant?" He said we might need one if we walk around. I'll be fine.

We arrive at Ventana, get out of the car, walk half way to the entrance, and all of the sudden Tyler says, "I forgot my jacket!." "Seriously? We're almost to the door." I laughed, kind of confused (clue #2). So he grabs his jacket.

We check-in with the hostess, and surprisingly, we're told our table is set with menus and ready to go. Weird, I thought. I've been to Ventana enough times to know that the menus are never waiting at the table (clue #2.5).

Im looking over the drinks menu because I knew one thing for sure, I wanted a margarita. I actually won a bet earlier that day so Tyler owed me a drink. I ask Tyler what he is going to get, and he's not sure, but he looks kind of distracted. The waitress comes to take our order, and to my surprise, he orders the same thing I do. A nice, fruity margarita.

Once the waitress leaves, Tyler almost immediately gets up from his chair and states "I have to go to the bathroom." Oh, ok. You go right ahead. (Clue #3). Meanwhile, I'm having a real life struggle as I try to decide if I should get the "usual" or venture off the deep end and get something new. So many decisions.

Tyler comes back, sits down, and I share my struggle with him. Still looking over the menu, the waitress comes back with our drinks, sets them down, I say thank you because I'm nice, and continue my search for a satisfactory meal.

Out of the corner of my eye, I can see something is not right. Tyler is not in his chair. Where might he be? Oh, just on his knee with a box in his hand! >> (final clue) Once my brain registers what he's doing, I'm thrown. I literally can't believe he has tricked me into thinking a proposal would be another 4 months away, when in all reality, it was happening...now.

He starts saying how much he loves, that Im his best friend, and cant picture life with out me…things that honestly, I couldn't remember 5 min after it all happened because it was such a blur! He gave me a recap later since I was in shock at the time.

I obviously said YES!

People around us cheered, toasted, and fist pumped in celebration. I cried. I continued crying for about a good 10 minutes. Mostly because I was happy but also because I was so surprised. Tyler said I didn't react immediately the way he thought I would, but as it all sunk in, he got the reaction he was looking for. I was over the moon as I realized this was reality. We are getting married!

There's even pictures that captured my utter surprise! Tyler shared that when he got up to go to the bathroom, he really chased after the waitress to share with her his plan. She knew it was an engagement dinner, but he explained that once she put down our drinks, he was going to pass her his phone to take pictures of the proposal.

So surprised! Our kind neighbor claps because he's happy for us.

On it goes! Our neighbor raises a toast.

Happy tears :)

Still in shock…and we get a fist pump from the neighbors!
